Materials for Friday’s Structures Workshop

In teams of two, please arrive to this Friday’s in-class workshop with the following materials (minimum) in hand:

  • Modeling Base:  MDF 30″ x  30″ x 1/2″ (or) 30″ square prefab hardboard panel
  • Columnar Material A:  120 wood dowels, 1/16” diameter  x  3” length [48:1]
  • Columnar Material B:  120 wood dowels, 1/8” diameter  x  6” length [48:1]
  • Spanning Material A:  120 basswood sticks, 1/16” x 1/8” x 3”length [24:1]
  • Spanning Material B:  120 basswood sticks, 1/16” x 1/4” x 6”length [24:1]
  • Tracing paper:  18” wide roll.
  • Elastic fabric:  1 square yard jersey knit (or) hosiery (or) spandex
  • Fastening materials:  Double stick tape, 1/2″ diameter (or smaller) rubber bands, Acrylic glue, Braided fishing line, Small binder clips.

During the investigation, lengths of material are consumed quickly.  So, don’t let the quantities intimidate you.  You can mass produce if you’re careful, for example:
