S14_1b_Anatomy (Influences of Chicago)

overview:

Using the terms and criteria that we have begun to define and develop in the ‘Bodies’ exercise, examine one of the prescribed territories in Chicago and map the various bodies that influence/determine that place.

objectives:

– Fieldwork

– Explore the city with intent

– Develop new understandings of place based on observation

– Use observations to develop ‘thick’ questions about place

– Exhaustively define bodies of influence across areas of the city

process:

In studio, select one of the six (6) ‘points of departure’ from where you will begin your research.  The points of departure are described as cartesian block coordinates (addresses) within the city :

1. 800 EAST / 5100 SOUTH

2. 1600 WEST / 3500 SOUTH

3. 800 WEST / 2200 SOUTH

4. 3000 WEST / 500 NORTH

5. 3000 WEST / 2000 NORTH

6. 1200 WEST / 4800 NORTH

The ‘point of departure’ is a point (center) within an ‘AREA OF INTEREST’ that is to be explored.  The ‘AREA OF INTEREST’ is the territory defined by a 20 minute walk in every direction from the point of departure.  Very roughly, this territory extends a mile in the cardinal directions radiating from the point of departure.

In your small teams, visit the site.  Systematically observe the entire area of interest by any and all means available to you.  Observe.  Record.  Map all the bodies of influence that intersect the site.  Just as we began to do with the Day 1 exercise, map the bodies as regions/zones territories.  You are responsible for mapping every body of influence at play on the site.

Additionally, do not terminate the ‘bodies’ at the extent of the region.  You are responsible for mapping the entire extent of the body.   For example, a neighborhood that passed through the 1.5 mile diameter region should be represented as the full neighborhood.  Use any and all means available to research and define the regions, and represent them with intent.  Some bodies may be drawn as edges, some as fields, but also consider color, texture, transparency, etc, when representing the bodies.

criteria:

Influences that define bodies in the territory being explored may include but are not limited by:

income

religion

crime

family

culture

race

history

infrastructure

water

parkland

transit

politics

migration

health

commerce

housing

food

services

neighborhoods

police districts

zoning

education

geology

industry

density

entertainment

gangs

topography

economics

tourism

institutions

immigration

energy

view

sound

property value

landmarks

income

questions:

  1. What phenomena characterize the regions you’ve outlined?  What aspects inform your perception that it has an identity that’s different from its surroundings?  Can you provide evidence to support your observations – via your own empirical observation or collected data?

  2. How would you characterize the texture of the region?  Is it continuous, a gradient, a distributed field, or another form?

  3. Are the limits of the region abrupt, or are they fuzzy?  Is the character of these limits similar on all sides?

schedule:

W      15 Jan       Assignment launch / Site Visit / Fieldwork

F        17 Jan      ‘Structuralism’ lecture / mapping draft due – full deliverable / desk crits

M      20 Jan      Martin Luther King Jr Day – NO CLASS

w       22 Jan       Final mapping due – All studio review in Crown Hall (2-6 pm, Upper Core)

deliverables

For the review:

1.  Two tiled maps (second should be duplicate of the first) that demonstrates the full extent of all mapped bodies that influence your specific ‘area of interest’.  All maps should be printed at 1″=500′.

2. Evidence and demonstration of your Fieldwork and subsequent research and analysis.  Evidence may include sketches, notes, annotations, questions, researched/retrieved data.

Note: Photographs of the area of interest will not be permitted as deliverables for the review.
