Lecture on ‘Perception and Senses’ tomorrow in Perlstein.

Pre-cut sheets of  ¼” or ½” white foam core, cardboard, chip board, etc.  Please use scrap materials wherever possible and share amongst each other when you can.

you will need:
(2) 9”x12” boards. These will be the floors for your spaces.
(8) 15” tall boards to create walls for your space. Account for the thickness of your material; the walls are to sit on the “floor”.
(2) boards to be used as ceiling planes. The ceiling will sit inside the walls so, again, account for the thickness of that material.
(1) 4”x4” board
(1) 12”x4” board

In addition to the space defining sheets you should have the following pre-prepared items
(10) ½” scale figures standing
(2) groups of 5 scale figures sitting on a simple bench.

Working with your precut materials you will quickly assemble one space, holding the walls together with masking tape. Explore concepts of grandeur, comfort, appropriateness, discomfort and danger by gradually lowering the ceiling using dress maker pins to hold it in place. Get into your space and study the “feel” of the space with different ceiling heights. Photograph each iteration of the space before you disassemble it. Place your scale figures into the space to evaluate each change you make.

Using the ceiling arrangement you deemed most appropriate during exercise 1, deploy the (2) freestanding walls within the space. These interior walls may be used independently or in consort. How can you create intimacy, screen another activity, provide surfaces for artwork or program with these walls? Use your scale figures to reinforce the tableau. Again, photograph each iteration.

exercise 3 | “let there be light”
Using your model from exercise 2, take down the deployed walls and remove or puncture the exterior walls to create opportunities for light and view. Consider a strategy before you start cutting so you can use the same board over different iterations. Explore the directionality of the light, the size of the aperture, the height of the opening relative to the floor and the ceiling, and its relationship to other walls. Use your light source to bring light into the space and photograph each iteration and lighting effect.

Now you have a series of digital photographs of your work and of the spaces you have created. For Friday’s class manipulate these photographs to best describe your outcomes and further explore the potential. Select 3 photographs of your space and modify them to create vignettes which communicate the “feel” of the space as you imagine it. At the most basic level you will need to clean up edges from your study models, eliminate glue marks or tears in the paper and remove any background of the studio space. With these clean, baseline images you can add colour, scale, texture, a view to another space or make changes to the space digitally. Print copies of your “renderings” for a pin up on Friday.

The deadline for the annual Spring Break Programs got extended to, February 25. There are still some open spots available!

The College of Architecture offers two study travel programs this year; one international and one domestic. We will be conducting a trip to Barcelona under the direction of Professor Martin Klaeschen and a trip to San Francisco and Los Angeles with Professor Timothy Brown.

Quick update regarding 25% review tomorrow:

Reviews will start at 2pm sharp all over the lower level of Crown Hall.

Reviews will be in the form of short and structured digital slideshows.  There is no formal slide limit, nor is there a formal time limit per slide, but our intent is for you to prepare a well choreographed sequence that describes your process and proposal.  For the sake of time, we will limit you each to a maximum of 4 minutes for your presentation.  This is a considerable amount of time, and each of you should be able to present your images in that time frame.

As we did for the Box for Boats, we will be mixing up the studios and professors to cross-pollinate the conversations and the ideas.  Please keep your eyes and ears open during the course of the review.  Your own work will benefit greatly from your participation and engagement in this conversation.  You can find your 25% Review Professor on this PDF (12S_A306_25% REVIEW ROSTER).  We’ll post this on the studio doors as well.

The professors from the East Studio – Issa, Kearns and Tinucci will be in lower core.  Professor Sorrell will be in Room 14 and Professors Blender, Braucher and Klaeschen will be in the West Studio.   A student within each group will need to volunteer their computer for the review, and each of you will need to have your slideshow on a flash drive ready to load onto the review computer.  We’ll spend time at the beginning of the review loading the presentations onto a single computer so that the review can proceed efficiently once we’ve begun.  In order to review, you must have your slide show loaded onto the computer at the beginning of studio.

And one piece of advice – don’t wing it.  Take a step back and review your sequence.  Know very specifically the points you want to make with each slide. If you don’t have a point for a slide, you probably don’t need it, and if you have more than 3 points for any slide, you may need another.  And lastly, practice your presentation a few times.  Just go over it in your head a few times on a clear and rested mind.

Also, many of the samples do not have the necessary information regarding the mix design, the formwork design or the consolidation method.  This information is fundamental to the success of the workshop and exercise.  Without this information, we can’t systematically compare the results.  Please, review these photos and if your cast is missing information, please provide it to Chris by email or simply post comments to the images from within Flickr.  Either is acceptable.  Please do this promptly so that we can complete the book and get it into your hands for your use throughout the remainder of the semester.

Lecture in Perlstein today at 1:50.  Tim Brown, who has spent many days and nights at the Monastery by Corbu outside Lyon, will be providing us an intimate look into the building.

If it wasn’t too much trouble to get there in a timely manner so that we could have a full house for him and start promptly, we would greatly appreciate it.

We will meet inside the church. Please ARRIVE ON TIME! Prayer will start at 2:30pm. If you arrive after the prayer starts please respect the monk’s code of silence and remain outside the church until the monks will have finished their prayer (approx. 2:45pm).

After the prayer one of the brothers will talk about the monastery and the life of a monk. Make sure that you prepare all your questions that came up in your studio. We will also get to see the model and blue prints of new design of the monastery.
